What Detail collects, why it collects it, and how to get rid of it.

Last updated 23 August 2026.

Detail (detail.design) is run by Rene Wang, an individual. This page explains what the site collects, why, and how to have it removed. It covers detail.design and its subdomains.

The short version: you can read every page here without an account, and nothing about you is stored beyond anonymous traffic counts. Signing in adds an email address and whatever you choose to put in your profile. Nothing is sold, and nothing goes to advertisers.

Reading the site

Traffic counts. Page views are measured by a self-hosted Umami instance at analytics.detail.design and by Vercel Analytics. Both are cookieless and aggregate — page path, referrer, screen size, browser, country. No advertising profile is built, and no visit is tied back to a person.
Server logs. The site runs on Vercel, which keeps short-lived request logs containing your IP address and user agent. They exist to serve pages and to spot abuse.
Preferences. Your light/dark choice lives in your browser's local storage. It never leaves your device.

Signing in with Google

If you choose "Continue with Google", Google passes the site three things from your Google Account: your email address, your name, and your profile picture URL. That is all of it. Detail requests only the basic openid, email and profile scopes and reads nothing else — no Gmail, no Drive, no Contacts, no Calendar.

That information is used to create and identify your account, to greet you by name in the interface, and to email you. It is stored by Supabase, the site's authentication and database provider, and it is never sold, rented, or handed to anyone outside the processors listed below.

Detail's use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. You can revoke the site's access at any time from your Google Account permissions; doing so stops future sign-ins but does not by itself delete the account here — see Deleting your account below.

Signing in by email

The alternative is a one-time code sent to your address. In that case the only thing collected is the email address itself, plus the timestamps Supabase records for the sign-in.

Your profile

A display name and an avatar, both optional, both editable from the account panel. They are stored on your account record at Supabase.

Avatar files go into a public storage bucket — anyone holding the URL can view the image, the same way a profile picture works anywhere else. One file per account; uploading a new one replaces the old.

Submissions

If you submit a detail, the site stores your comment, the link you gave, and any file you uploaded, along with your account id so the submission can be credited back to you.

Uploaded files go into a private bucket. Only Rene reviews them. A submission that gets published may appear on the site, with attribution if you asked for it; one that doesn't simply stays in the queue.

Newsletter

The newsletter is sent through Resend, which holds your email address and your subscription state. New accounts are enrolled once, on first sign-in. Unsubscribe from the account panel or from the link in any issue — once you're out, you stay out; the site will not re-enrol you.

Cookies

Only the ones that make sign-in work: Supabase sets session cookies so you stay signed in between visits. There are no advertising cookies, no tracking pixels, and no third-party cookies on this site.

How long it's kept

Account data — email, display name, avatar, submissions — is kept for as long as your account exists. Vercel's request logs roll off on their own within about a month. Analytics data is aggregate and holds nothing that identifies you.

Deleting your account

Email hi@detail.design from the address on the account. Everything tied to it — the account record, the avatar, your submissions — is deleted within 30 days, and your address is removed from the newsletter.

You can also, at any time: edit or clear your display name and avatar from the account panel, turn the newsletter off from the same place, and ask for a copy of everything the site holds about you.

If you're in the EU, the UK, or California, you have the rights those laws give you — access, correction, deletion, portability, and objection. The route to all of them is the same email address, and there's no charge.

Children

Detail isn't aimed at children and doesn't knowingly collect anything from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has created an account, write in and it will be removed.

Changes

Material changes get a new date at the top of this page and a note in the newsletter. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the updated policy.
