Paperclip Pin Hover

An unconventional pin icon that transforms on hover, using a paperclip metaphor that opens to signal unpinning.

In the Velocity theme for Obsidian, the tab pin action breaks from convention by using a paperclip icon instead of the traditional pushpin. This unexpected metaphor becomes intuitive through a clever hover interaction: the paperclip visually opens, signaling to users that hovering will unpin the tab.

Why It Works

This detail demonstrates how thoughtful iconography can communicate both state and action. The closed paperclip represents a pinned tab, while the opening animation on hover provides immediate visual feedback about what will happen if you click.

The paperclip metaphor is particularly apt—paperclips hold documents together temporarily, just as pinned tabs maintain their position in your workspace. The opening motion creates a clear cause-and-effect relationship: hover makes it open, clicking will release it.
